The construction of light systems in Mexico will continue with positive projections in the medium term, for this reason, the company USG (creator of Tablaroca) plans to invest 250 million dollars in the next five years, said Fernando Fernández, its general director.

The conversion of traditional systems to light, the construction of hotels, cinemas, hospitals and the rise of the residential segment have helped to make its gypsum boards, cement boards, ceiling lights and other products more widely accepted. They estimate to close the year with a 20% increase in their income, compared to 2021.

Although gypsum board usage saw minimal growth, other categories offset the company's revenue. In addition, exports made to Guatemala, Costa Rica or the Dominican Republic from Mexico also underpin the good moment. Of the total USG production, 50% is marketed in other countries.

Mexico is an expanding market in which USG systems have managed to position themselves in all sectors, and in recent years especially in homes, thanks to the advantages associated with their speed of installation, safety, durability, design and comfort, said the manager.

The high inflation that the country is experiencing, which in traditional construction caused 30% increases in material costs, Fernández highlighted that they have opted to have operational excellence that helps mitigate the effects and part of the announced investment will be used to improve the installed capacity, distribution and innovation that allows them to remain competitive compared to other contracting systems.

In addition, with the USG University that they have in Mexico City, they managed to train 7,600 people (physically and virtually) this year, which helps speed up product installation processes and greater experience, for the benefit of building owners. .

Next year they will open universities in  Monterrey and Guadalajara, with which they seek to have a greater presence among the nearly 30,000 workers that they estimate are active throughout the country.

According to the director of USG, the per capita consumption of gypsum board in Japan (the leading country) is between 10 and 12 m2 per person, in the United States it is between 7 and 9 m2 per person, while in Mexico it is around 0.35 m2, which still suggests years of prosperity for the company. Regarding self-construction and remodeling, it was highlighted that there is a growing interest in light materials being part of it with obvious economic benefits.
