Two of the main commodities demanded by the automotive industry in Mexico are plastic and aluminum.

Plastic has had a greater implementation because it is lighter and more malleable than steel, to the extent that, until 2020, it represented 15% of a vehicle.

This percentage is distributed throughout practically the entire unit, concentrating 48% on internal components: being present in parts such as the instrument panel, air conditioning ducts, the interior door panel and the accessory buttons.

Another 27% is used in external components: Due to its durability and impact, it is used for door handles, headlights, fuel tanks and mirrors.

In lower percentage with 14% in powertrain components: with a high resistance to temperatures and pressure, it is suitable for the water cooler, transmission gears, the engine cover and the water intake manifold.

Finally, another 11% is used for cables and electrical components: thanks to its properties as an electrical and thermal insulator, the covers and cable ducts, as well as the sensors, are made of this material.

In the case of aluminum, the manager pointed out that this is also a raw material for the manufacture of a large number of automotive components, for example, 30% of an engine is developed with this material, and it is also present in the transmission, wheels , driving, among others.

As for the process, the most common is foundry and forging, but in recent years there has been a greater demand for laminated and extruded aluminum, both for exteriors, as in the case of the production of the Ford Lobo truck, which implemented a trunk of this material.

Plastic and aluminum are in great demand for the manufacture of exterior components of a vehicle, since both allow to reduce the weight of the unit, one of the main objectives of the large assemblers.
