Although the business strategy that allows companies to bring production centers closer to their consumer markets, also known as nearshoring, has gained momentum in the last five years, the emergence of the pandemic that accelerated this process and led to a new level.
If we analyze the sectors that have benefited from this phenomenon or are susceptible to doing so, we find the one related to the electrical-electronic sector and, in general, all those related to Industry 4.0 and the digitization of processes, are apt to do so, according to his opinion. Ernesto Acevedo, former undersecretary of Industry, Commerce and Competitiveness of the Ministry of Economy.
In his participation in the webinar ‘Relocation and nearshoring. Prospects for Mexico ’, Acevedo stressed that, regarding this issue, we must focus on the development of national suppliers, since Mexico has a vocation for work that is undoubtedly an important driving force, given the situation.

For Tatiana Clouthier, Secretary of Economy, the opportunity for the sector is also real. So much so that, during his last working tour of Washington, held in mid-September, he met with representatives of technology companies such as the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) and the Information Technology Council (ITC), as well as with executives from Intel and Amazon, with the aim of urging them to relocate their supply chains in Mexico, according to the SE in a statement.
Another factor that influences the creation of new business opportunities for the members of the value chain of the national electrical-electronics industry is, without a doubt, the change in the consumption habits of the population, which has shifted towards greater use of smartphones, computers and game consoles.
The problem for some and an opportunity in the medium and long term for others, is that this increase has caused the shortage of some key elements for the manufacture of many of the products in this sector, such as semiconductors and chips.
Traditionally, these components are manufactured mostly in Taiwan and South Korea, countries that control 56% and 18% of world semiconductor production, respectively, according to data from Statista in the first quarter of this year.

In this context, Nearshoring, as stated by Luis Fernando Guzmán, specialist in technology and electronics for Mexico and Central America at Maersk, would allow companies in the region to “respond more agilely to the growing demand and face the challenges that the increase in the volume of imports is generating in the main ports of Latin America ”.
The manufacturing of consumer technology products in Latin America ranges from the design and manufacture of components, sub-assembly, to the manufacture of final products in areas such as telephony, computers, and household appliances, to name a few.
“The strategic geographical location close to North America, the great potential for energy production, the great variety of natural resources and the increasingly specialized workforce make Latin America a region that will greatly benefit from the advantages of Nearshoring, both in its economic development as well as in its ability to satisfy the growing domestic demand ”, concluded Guzmán.
