Mexico's automotive industry, since its origins in 1900, has made impressive progress in establishing itself as a globally competitive manufacturer. In 2021, the country's passenger car market recorded revenues of more than $51.4 billion, more than a quarter of its 2020 revenue, according to Statista.

Despite recent production shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico was among the largest motor vehicle producers in the world and the leader in the entire Latin American region.

Many economies have suffered from the semiconductor crisis, with some blaming a shrinking supplier base and manufacturing consolidation for the ongoing chip shortage.

About 75% of the world's semiconductors are made in East Asia. According to TACNA Manufacturing, the problem will only get worse unless companies expand the size of their supplier network and outsource to other countries like Mexico.

Mexico already has a robust semiconductor manufacturing industry that produces nearly 12% of annual global supply, on par with US output, according to market researchers Tetakawi.

As the world's fourth-largest automaker and eighth-largest electronics maker, Mexico offers US companies a cost-effective and resilient option to diversify their manufacturing.

Mexico has been well positioned to gain a larger share of manufacturing work. Furthermore, its manufacturing capacity could present a promising future: "Mexico has always been an attractive manufacturing market compared to the US and Europe," says Misha Govshteyn, CEO of MacroFab.

Recent transportation challenges, particularly shipping delays, have made the cost difference even starker when full costs are taken into account, thus favoring Mexico.
