GKN Sintered Metals arrives in Guanajuato

The manufacturing process of metal parts has diversified in the country, and Guanajuato will be the state that has a company specialized in powder metal sintering processes, offering various significant advantages over other parts manufacturing processes.

Alejandro Nieto Paz, plant manager of GKN Sintered Metals, the first plant based on sintered metal powder, will work with materials such as copper, aluminum and stainless steel that can be used in all industrial equipment, specifically automotive.

GKN Sintered Metals will be the first supplier of its kind globally. These are pieces of great complexity and advanced technology. 

These types of parts have a wide range of applications in the automobile and in general in the industry. At the Salem, Indiana plant, GKN manufactures a number of truck transmission clutch plate parts produced by 3 major automakers.

Regarding the production process, he explained that as powdered metal is the main raw material, they are compacted and a solid or porous mass is generated, which is then passed through a heating process to increase its resistance through the union of its particles.

The estimated production that the company has per year is 16 million units and will be destined for the local market, with the main clients being Bosch, Hella, KSPG, Pierburg and Hitachi. 

The company will reach 130 employees in a first phase and the idea is to triple to 390 employees. The investment of the first phase is 30 million dollars and 8 thousand meters of a total area of 2.7 hectares will be built.

The company will begin to receive machinery and equipment from April and will begin work in September 2019. In Guanajuato this company has three more plants, it is GKN Driveline and they are located in Villagran and Celaya, where they build and supply a wide range of products and automotive transmission systems, for use from premium to more sophisticated vehicles.

This company was the first in the automotive sector to settle in Guanajuato since 2005 and over the years has expanded its sales by a further third than what it currently sells. The investment in the entity reaches 546 million dollars with which it has generated more than 1,300 jobs.
