The cement industry in Mexico, like all others, was transformed by the pandemic. The National Cement Chamber indicates that it generated more than 20,000 direct jobs, produced more than 3,500,000 tons per month and contributed 1% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
In addition to the economic impact due to the environment experienced, the sector has not been exempt from pressure on final prices. For example, in the first month of this year, the price of gray cement increased by 14.5% per 50-kilogram package and 20% per bulk ton, compared to December 2021.

The increases contrasted with the 2.4% rise that producer prices averaged in January compared to last December, indicated the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
Considering the last 12 months to the month of January 2022, the price of cement accumulated a rebound of 9.23%, ready-mix concrete advanced 6.51% in the same period and 7.29% in other concrete products, according to the Inegi.
Despite the challenges, Mexicans are still interested in building or buying a home, and although it is unlikely that a confinement will return in Mexico, the different economic activities are susceptible to change due to the new variants of covid, so cement will continue buying.
However, the industry will face challenges in the medium term, since the war between Russia and Ukraine could cause an increase in the price of energy sources such as natural gas, in addition to shortages, which will put pressure on the final prices of the industry.
