The export industry in Nuevo León and the advantages of reshoring
RIM | February 09, 2022 |

For many manufacturing companies established in Mexican territory, the reshoring initiative generated in the United States with the intention of once again narrowing the distances of the supply chains could translate into very good opportunities to attract new projects.

INEGI data showed at the end of 2021 a growth projection for exports towards the end of the year compared to 2020 (491,574 against 416,999 million dollars).

The growth is observed in new projects in the automotive industry that prepare production lines for models 2023 and 2024, which are already in the process of being prepared in some of the Tier 1 and 2 established on Mexican soil.

One of the entities most attentive to this commercial phenomenon is Nuevo León, because in addition to its border position with the United States, it is an emblem of industrial production in the country, strong in steel manufacturing and in sectors such as the automotive, aerospace, and household appliances. and medical devices.

Manufacturing represents 64% of the economic activity of New Zealand and more than 9% of national exports. Nuevo León is the state of the Republic with the highest attraction of foreign direct investment (FDI), with 18.5 billion dollars.

For this reason, the entity generates a great attraction that is for the intentions of relocating manufacturing, for American, European and Asian companies.

Teresa Galindo, director of the Nuevo León headquarters of the National Council of the Maquiladora and Export Manufacturing Industry (Index), confirms that there is already a lot of evidence of companies that are looking to set up operations in Mexico, either their own or under a scheme of supply.

The intention is not a secret, "they seek to have them close to the United States, whether for industries such as electronics, automotive or medical, to name the most important."

But it is noteworthy that reducing dependence on China is the first step, since many of those interviewed foresee greater advantages if they take reshoring to Mexican or Canadian lands.

Monterrey, the state capital, has developed and excelled in high-tech production, which is why Galindo warns that it is not by chance that large-scale companies have investment plans in the locality, such is the case of Corning, which in 2022 has a project for a new plant to manufacture fiber optics.

A trigger for high-tech manufacturing has been the Technological Research and Innovation Park (PIIT), founded in 2006 and located in the municipality of Apodaca, whose vision has been to generate a culture of innovation and competitiveness based on the development of science and technology.

Currently, according to data shared by Index, 60% of the companies in the region have US capital, and the rest are divided into Japanese, German, French, Canadian and Chinese capital.

Hofusan Industrial Park, of Chinese capital, where it is expected that at least 10 Chinese companies will be installed to supply the industries that operate in that area of northeastern Mexico.

Reshoring is undoubtedly a window of opportunity, Nuevo León is one of the entities with the greatest opportunity to bring projects for the production of assemblies, subassemblies or finished products. Index will play a fundamental role in this task, everything is in maintaining its strengths, adequately promoting the available capabilities and focusing on intellectual capital and value addition.
