The governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García Sepúlveda, together with the mayors of metropolitan municipalities, signed an agreement with the national director of the Institute of the National Fund for Workers' Housing (Infonavit), Carlos Martínez Velázquez, to prevent the stain from growing and look for mechanisms to rehabilitate houses that are abandoned.

“We signed a collaboration agreement with the government of Nuevo León in favor of Metropolitan Urban Development (…) For this reason, starting in May, Infonavit credits will be conditioned on the subdivisions being located where there are health services, education and supply, within a radius of no more than 2.5 kilometers.”

He estimated that currently the inhabitants of about 800,000 homes in the entity have problems moving over distance.

For his part, Samuel García said that there are no longer nine metropolitan municipalities, but that the urban area comprises 14 municipalities and that, for example, there are workers who sleep in Pesquería and work in Santa Catarina.

García Sepúlveda commented that next Monday, March 7, they will deliver to the local Congress the new Political Constitution of Nuevo León, which includes the new metropolitan coordination, as well as new tasks for the municipal presidencies, under a legal framework that allows them to be long term.

On the other hand, “last Sunday the issue of abandoned houses on the outskirts was put on the agenda, we have to be creative, it is a complex source of insecurity. In Nuevo León we have a peculiarity, 92% of the population lives in the metropolitan area”, emphasized the governor.

He argued that it is necessary to rescue abandoned homes due to several factors, first because the migration of people from other states and countries who stay in the entity for job opportunities increased, and 140,000 people are added every year, “with everything and Covid-19 ”.

“The federation cannot cover its eyes, we grew twice as much and we consume water from the

same aquifer, in 2040 (the projections are) that there will be 9 million inhabitants in the state and no adaptation has been made,” said the governor.

In addition, Asian and European companies are arriving, "Ternium is going to expand and KIA is going to expand", and more housing is going to be required, but urban sprawl must be stopped, he stressed.
