Mexican fibers work as a thermometer to measure how the Mexican real estate sector is doing, due to the number of buildings they own.

In 2020, for example, they recorded a profitable gross area of assets in operation of more than 24 million square meters, plus a million under development.

Last year's results also show that the industry is moving towards the sustainable path.

Of the 15 Mexican real estate trusts affiliated with the Asociación Mexicana de Fibras or Amefibra, 67% have begun to establish specific goals and objectives in ESG (environmental, social and corporate governance) criteria.

For all of them to walk in the same direction, the association issued an ESG Manual during 2020 to support standardization efforts.

One of the steps followed has been to use management systems such as ISO 140001: 2015 to constantly monitor their actions.

In addition, they have established annual performance objectives for the general management and committees, which seek to have a positive impact in the social, economic and environmental areas.

The construction industry is one of the most carbon-emitting industries in the world.

The National Housing Commission or Conavi estimates that 50% of the world's polluting emissions come from its operations, which include the construction of real estate.

During 2020, the Mexican Fibers monitored its impact and measures followed. During this year, 80% of the members of the association registered their electricity consumption, which amounted to 8,471,555.85 GJ.

With the figure, it was decided to install photovoltaic systems, LED luminaires, and make ventilation more efficient, among other actions, thereby reducing base consumption by 5%.

They also consumed 9,573,897.47 cubic meters of water, 146,502,372.08 tons of non-hazardous solid waste were generated and it was found that only 7% of the gross profitable area had some type of environmental certification.

Taking into account the results, it was established that by 2024 the parameters for the generation of pollutants should be reduced and greater savings strategies should be implemented in buildings.

Currently, 73% of them have a policy and / or procedure focused on environmental management.
