The buildings of the cities have to be intelligent, since they occupy 2% of the urban space in the world, while they consume 75% of the energy and generate 80% of the emission of greenhouse gases, according to data from the Mexican Association of Intelligent and Sustainable Building (IMEI).

In addition, around 30% of the world's energy consumed is given in them, at the time of construction or in daily operations; To this we must add that tearing down those 'unsuitable' is an option that is not valid, if there is a renewal, which would increase the attractiveness for investors.

The Efficient Buildings Challenge is part of the Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) of the UN's 'Sustainable Energy for All' initiative.

These types of buildings provide physical and environmental well-being to the people who inhabit them, since they control the performance of temperature, humidity, lighting or air movement, using technology that is always connected and that provides real information in each situation.

In Mexico, for example, Telefónica Movistar participated in the Efficient Buildings Challenge (REE), with the Torre Telefónica Movistar México corporate building and the La Presa Telecommunications Station, to reduce the energy consumption of the registered buildings for one year.

In Mexico, about 18% of the country's total energy is consumed by buildings, which contribute 12% of CO2 emissions.

Through hybrid operation schemes, presence sensors, lights on and off schedules, among others, the company achieved energy efficiency in corporate offices of 987,061 kWh, equivalent to 45% of electricity consumption compared to 2020.

It also achieved a 15% reduction in electricity consumption at the facilities of the 'La Presa' telecommunications plant, equivalent to 555,844 kWh.

Marta Vegas, leader of Sustainability for Telefónica Hispam, said that with her participation in the challenge, the company managed to avoid the emission of 531.3 tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) equivalent to the atmosphere due to the efficiency in electricity consumption compared to the year previous.
