De Luna Lithium Battery, a Mexican company that seeks to lead the production of lithium batteries for electric vehicles in Mexico, has made the decision to redirect the investment of 80 million dollars that it had planned to establish a plant in Sonora to the State of Mexico

The CEO of the company, Giovanni De Luna, explained that the changes in the cabinet of the state government in the border entity at the beginning of this year, particularly in the Ministry of Economy, resulted in delays in defining the original location of the investment. This has also slowed down the development of the lithium-related value chain.

Due to confidentiality agreements, the names of the companies to which the first battery packs will be supplied have not yet been disclosed. However, De Luna emphasized the interest of several US companies that want to have a regional supply in North America.

"Several companies that have contacted us share the same goal: to satisfy the demand of their customers who are looking to move away from Chinese suppliers due to future government restrictions," adds De Luna.

China currently leads the world in lithium battery production, with 79% of production, according to data from the German consultancy Statista. This number is expected to decrease over time due to improvements in the European programmes.

A report from the same consultancy indicates that Germany is on track to become the world's second largest producer of lithium-ion batteries by 2025. Today it has around 11% of the world's production capacity.
